Rail-specific WLAN Technologies

A data communication system (DCS) consists of a wired backbone network, a wireless wayside network, and an on-board vehicle network, which provide communications between all CBTC sub-systems. A DCS architecture needs uninterrupted robust communications to support safety, security (video, voice), and other demanding applications, such as maintenance and passenger infotainment system. For this reason, low handoff latency and fully redundant DCS systems are the foundations of smooth CBTC operations.

Engineered specifically for control and operations in a railway context, Moxa's rail-specific sub-50 ms Turbo Roaming and multi-redundancy technologies ensure DCS connectivity.Moxa's portfolio includes innovative breakthroughs such as Auto Carriage Connection (ACC), which is specifically tailored to create inter-carriage communications links: ACC will flexibly adapt to any change in train composition during the course of daily service, and still maintain a high level of WLAN security.

Key Features
Sub-50 ms Turbo Roaming guarantees uninterrupted train-to-ground links
ACC (Auto Carriage Connection) enables automatic inter-carriage wireless links
Rugged M12 design ensures vibration resistant connectivity
Multi-redundant features deliver absolutely reliable network connections
Support of real-time PIS, PA, and video surveillance systems
Case Studies
Train to Ground
A DCS system provides the exchange of information between onboard applications and ground infrastructure, regardless of the position of the train along the line. A moving train is only connected to a specific wayside AP for a few seconds, and handover times that exceed 100 ms may cause critical data loss. Reducing roaming times under 50 ms is an uncompromising reality faced by the rail industry. For more…

Carriage to Carriage
In a rail operating environment, train carriages are constantly coupled and uncoupled to create new train formations. Conventional ways of using physical cabling to form inter-carriage communications links cause some costly problems. An 802.11 WLAN can be used in an existing network, without modifying the existing cables and couplings. For more…

Onboard Vehicle
For metros or light-rail systems, the CBTC system is the key element of the integrated automatic train control network by ensuring safe train movement and efficient rail operations. At present, WLANs act as the mobile component of the train’s CBTC subsystems, and each train unit can be reliably connected to the wayside network through the active client over redundant links.
