Abstract

ITS systems need a reliable, high bandwidth Gigabit fiber Ethernet infrastructure and multi-fiber connections to connect diverse traffic management systems. Moxa's compact managed Ethernet switches and industrial video encoders are ruggedly designed for industrial-grade fiber connections, easy expansions and cascades, and reliable traffic management networking systems to achieve maximum transportation efficiency and security.

Application Introduction

An ITS (Intelligent Transportation System) is often used to improve the efficiency and safety of the transportation infrastructure for highway and city traffic applications. An ITS includes different traffic management systems, including signal control systems, electronic toll collection, advanced parking systems, automatic vehicle identification, and video surveillance systems. All systems are connected to a control center through a reliable, high-bandwidth Gigabit Ethernet communication network. The control center combines all of the information and develops and evaluates traffic control strategies to achieve maximum transportation efficiency and security. Due to the wide coverage of transportation systems, multiple fiber Ethernet connections are the best networking solution to achieve long distance data transmission for remote traffic monitoring and control.

System Requirements

  • Gigabit Ethernet backbone infrastructure with redundant capability for video, voice, and data transmission over Ethernet to make real-time adjustments in traffic control.
  • Fiber connections are required to easily deploy multiple point communications over longer distances in traffic management systems.
  • Network devices with reliable and rugged construction that withstand extreme conditions in outdoor environments.
  • System devices in a compact size are perfect for the limited space requirements of roadside cabinets.
  • Flexible configuration and easy network expansion for future ITS upgrades.

Moxa's Solution
Traffic control and management systems are set up to transmit real-time traffic information between the control rooms to each sub traffic system, such as an IP video surveillance system. Due to the high bandwidth requirement and application scope, the systems require a Gigabit fiber optic backbone network with reliable redundancy to ensure that all information can be transmitted instantaneously. Moxa's EDS-616/619 series managed Ethernet switches provide up to 3 Gigabit fiber optic ports to form a Gigabit fiber backbone and Gigabit uplink that easily handles all video, audio, and traffic data streams. In addition, the built-in Turbo Ring network redundancy, IGMP snooping, and other management functions ensure reliable and secure network communication.

The modular design of the EDS-600 series provides various combinations of copper and fiber connections for different network configurations to IP phones, IP cameras, and signal controllers at traffic sites, and leaves room for future upgrades. Its compact size is ideal for installation in existing roadside cabinets with limited space, leaving room for additional equipment. In addition, the EDS-600 series' wide operating temperature range of -40 to 75ºC is especially suited for roadside cabinets in harsh outdoor environments.

Besides offering an optimal network infrastructure solution, Moxa's VPort 354 and VPort 461 industrial video encoders—with rugged form factors, fiber connections, and cascade feature—allow user to build a reliable video surveillance system for real-time traffic monitoring.
