Project Introduction
Highway emergency phones give drivers a direct connection to highway service centers if assistance is required. Traditionally, these phones are connected by twisted-pair cables to the service center. With the popularity of IP-based applications, integrators are considering other implementations and functions. A client in Italy wanted the ability to monitor each booth so engineers could immediately know if a booth was in use, in need of service, or being tampered with.
System Requirements The emergency phones were located at 1 kilometer intervals
along 300 kilometers of highway. All booths were connected
to an Ethernet network that ran the length of the highway. No
monitoring system was currently in place, so the only way to
tell if a phone needed service was to have a highway patrolman
test the phone in person. The client hoped to establish a more
efficient system with the following features:
Event driven alarm messages
Local device control
At least 2 digital input channels
Ability to reset booth power and activate alarm lamp
Ethernet interface
Easy mass deployment and firmware upgrade
System Description
The ioLogik E2210 Active Ethernet I/O server was chosen as a small control unit for each site. The ioLogik provided simple local device control for the alarm lamp, which would be automatically activated when the emergency button is pressed. A door sensor and tilt sensor were also connected, so the ioLogik could provide instant system notification when the door was opened or the booth was being tampered with. Finally, the ioLogik was connected to a power reset switch for the entire booth, so the booth could be restarted by remote or local command if any equipment required service.

Conclusion
ioLogik E2210
Active Ethernet I/O server with 12
digital inputs, 8 digital outputs
Event triggered I/O architecture for more efficient network traffic
Click&Go logic for easy local control without programming
TFTP support for mass remote deployment and few in-site visits
ioLogik E2000 I/O servers are designed for remote monitoring and control systems. With the ioLogik E2000 series, your monitoring system can be deployed more easily and quickly. Similar approaches to roadside cabinet monitoring may be applied to transportation applications, power meters, gas meters, water meters, and cable TV boxes.
