Waste Management and Recycling – DCS
Solution with Peer-to-Peer I/O
Project Introduction There is a great deal of public concern over the issues of global warming, energy shortages, and environmental preservation. The effort to recycle waste products is one environmental measure that has gained widespread support. Many governments now require citizens to separate trash into different categories for disposal. A leading provider of waste management systems in North America turned to Moxa to help them with their DCS. This provider offers the industry's widest selection of solid waste collection, recycling, and disposal options for homes, communities, business, and
industry.
System Requirements
The client's DCS was established many years ago to control their
recycling processes. The original I/O wiring had begun to degrade,
causing communication problems. Rewiring the factory would be
extremely costly and difficult. The client wanted a solution that satisfied
the following requirements:
•
Connects I/O signals wirelessly
•
IDoes not require a separate controller
•
Integrates into existing DCS without requiring software changes
System Description
I/O signals were exchanged between the PLC and the DCS through ioLogik units that connected to a wireless network. The wireless network was established by Ethernet hubs and AWK-1100 units. To the PLCs and the DCS, the wireless connections were invisible, and they could simply operate as if there was a direct physical connection between them.

Conclusion
ioLogik E2210
Active Ethernet I/O server with 12 digital
inputs, 8 digital outputs
ioLogik E2240
Active Ethernet I/O server with 2 analog inputs, 2 analog outputs
Support for both digital and analog signals with peer-to-peer I/O
Complete solution for I/O and wireless communication
There are many existing systems that require improvement or upgrading, and it is essential to minimize the effort and cost involved.
Moxa offers engineers a smart solution for exchanging I/O signals over Ethernet. Engineers no longer need to face the difficulties of physical wiring or of redesigning their DCS software.
