Using Ethernet to Build Hazard-free Monitoring Networks for Mining Sites

One of the most important aspects of modern mining is the need for highly integrated information systems. Such systems can improve mining efficiency, as well as various environmental factors that affect manufacturing output and security management. With mining disasters on the rise in some developing countries, there is a pressing need to upgrade mining facilities in general, and environmental monitoring systems in particular.

Mines are making increasing use of industrial Ethernet networks to integrate both manufacturing and environmental information for real-time monitoring, control, and analysis. Devices used in mines are required to have higher-level certifications compared to commercial products, and must meet the strict safety regulations imposed by the mining industry. Moxa's industrial Ethernet products provide a complete solution for the mining industry. Mining engineers are particularly impressed by the reliability and ruggedness of Moxa's products, and the fact that they are well-suited for harsh, or even hazardous environments.

Ethernet based Coal Mining Monitoring System

Introduction

The Zhangji coal mine was one of China's main national "95" construction projects, as well as the test mine of national coal mine infrastructure reformation instituted by China's Raw Coal Department. The mine has 12 minable coal layers that generate a yearly output of 4 million tons; the mine will be in service well into the next century.

It only took five years to complete the construction of the Zhangji coal mine, and the project set several new records by applying new technologies and establishing high manufacturing efficiency within a small territory. By insisting on using cost-effective products and high-end, efficient facilities, the Zhangji coal mine project set a benchmark in the mining industry.

With the increase in coal mine accidents in China, eliminating hazards was one of the primary construction goals of the Zhangji coal mine. All production and environmental monitoring information must be collected synchronously from each coal mine to report the production and environmental status. In order to ensure continuous monitoring of the environment under the coal mine, it was necessary to set up a reliable network that runs through the entire mining site.

System Description

The Zhangji coal mine uses an Ethernet network to set up its automation system. The system implements automated monitoring of the entire coal mine by conducting real-time monitoring on each sub system via a 2-tiered network, which transmits relevant data to a server, and then seamlessly uploads it to the management system in order to integrate and acquire the needed information. The system is structured on a reliable monitoring network, and has comprehensive functions to manage both production and environmental monitoring. In terms of production monitoring, it collects, transmits, processes, displays, records, and prints out the process data of the coal mine's major and supporting production operations synchronously by conducting centralized monitoring of major transport monitoring systems, such as supporting transport signal monitoring systems, transport systems in mining areas, mobile transformer station monitoring systems in mining areas, hydraulic station monitoring systems in mining areas, and intelligent mining control systems. At the same time, the centralized monitoring network collects all environmental monitoring information, such as gas monitoring, ventilation monitoring, temperature monitoring, etc. In order to ensure the safety of personnel, a video surveillance system monitors the entire area.

The main system adopts Mitsubishi's MELSECNET/H (25 Mbps, optical cables, dual ring) and CC-LINK at the device level, which were incorporated into the factory LAN. The MELSECNET/H transmits data directly to machines and equipment between control devices. Communication between stations at the device level is established by an independent CC-LINK network using a bus interface. The distances between underground sites are fairly long, the traffic is heavy, and electromagnetic interference is high. For this reason, at the control level, several Moxa ED6008-SS-SC switches are used to set up an optical ring Ethernet network. The Moxa ED6008 series consists of intelligent switches that come equipped with a network redundant protocol called Turbo Ring, which helps increase the reliability of the network. With its ultra high-speed recovery time, your automation system will be back to normal in less than 300 ms when any segment of your network gets disconnected.

The Ethernet network handles data transmission from the coal field underground to the control center above ground by setting up and deploying legacy tools for equipment (e.g., Telnet), and making it possible to install equipment control programs from a centralized location. This kind of application is commonly used at the management level. By implementing Ethernet-based centralized monitoring systems, administrators can monitor and control the coal field production process from a central control room to realize what could be termed "total mining automation."
