Automated Meter Reading Goes Wireless
With an Automated Meter Reading (AMR) system, meter data is automatically obtained for billing, management or monitoring purposes. AMR systems allow instant reporting and help reduce labor costs, which can be significant advantages for power suppliers, share holders, and end users.
Traditionally, power meters were read manually by an on-site technician. Improvements in technology have led to dramatic growth in the implementation of AMR systems, which can be retrofitted onto existing meters. However, it may not be practical to install additional wiring for an AMR system in urban settings, which have high meter densities and locations that are difficult to reach. A simple, cost-effective solution is needed to connect power meters to a central network, with minimal additional cabling.
There are several technologies available for implementing wireless AMR, such as Global System for Mobile communication (GSM), Global Packet Radio Service (GPRS), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and more. Although cellular solutions can be used anywhere that has cellular signal coverage, Wi-Fi solutions may be better suited for metropolitan areas where the wireless infrastructure is well-developed. Utility companies can enjoy the benefits of automated, centralized meter reading and the associated cost savings, without heavy investment in additional cabling.
