Several areas of the world are now enforcing
new environmental regulations that govern the manufacture and disposal
of products that include electronic components. First up was Europe.
The European Union's Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)
directive took effect in August of last year (2005), and the Restriction
on Hazardous Substances (RoHS) took effect starting in July
of 2006. RoHS has caused reverberations around the world. In fact,
since these directives became public in 2002, most companies in the
industry have been planning for the transition to no-lead products.
The two directives are described in more detail below:
| |
|
 |
WEEE—The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment directive addresses the problem of recycling electrical and electronic products. The directive establishes maximum recycling targets for all of Europe. |
| |
|
 |
RoHS—The Restriction on Hazardous Substances prohibits the use of lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, Polybrominated Biphenyl (PBB), and Polybrominated Diphenyl Ether (PBDE) flame retardants. |
| |
|
 |
China RoHS—The China government enacted this law to protect Chinese consumers and the environment by requiring manufacturers of "Electronic Information Products" to first declare, and then control, the use of hazardous substances. Electronic Information Products are subject to the self declaration and marking requirements of the China "RoHS" law that takes effect March 1, 2007.

One of the main concerns of manufacturers
of networking and communications equipment is getting rid of lead,
since lead is one of the main ingredients of solder. Moxa's customers
can rest assured that all of Moxa's new "green products," which
are being released this year, satisfy the EU's RoHS
directive.
Moxa's Green Promise
Moxa is dedicated to helping create and maintain a safe and clean environment, but our efforts are not limited to just the product. We have also taken great care to ensure that the product box, all types of packing material, plastic box handles, ink, and all other material used to process and ship our products, meet the RoHS guidelines.
