Moxa products are being used in a factory monitoring application that incorporates SNMP and IP video. IP video surveillance systems are quickly becoming a preferred alternative to CCTV security camera installations. Their performance and flexibility have made them especially attractive for factory security systems. Digital I/O devices are also commonly used for monitoring of specific events, but it is rare for IP video equipment to include digital input connections.
Requirements
The client needed to implement an IP video surveillance system at a factory, with certain areas requiring monitoring 24 hours a day. Digital I/O devices were also going to be used in the field for remote monitoring and control. The client wished to use a single platform to manage all devices, including all I/O signals. SNMP was the chosen platform, and the complete system needed to meet the following requirements:
- SNMP support for each device
- I/O device and status control by SNMP
- Device status reporting by SNMP trap
- Large bandwidth
- Reliable performance in bad weather conditions
System Description
The EDS-510A was used to establish a redundant Gigabit Ethernet network that provided enough bandwidth to support 200 IP video feeds. The two digital input channels provided on the EDS-510A were insufficient for all the items that required monitoring, so the ioLogik E2210 Active Ethernet I/O server was used. Since SNMP support is built into the ioLogik E2210, all I/O channels were available for SNMP-based control and monitoring, with no additional management software required. Furthermore, status changes for each I/O channel could be actively reported by SNMP trap, eliminating the need for polling.
