Tunnel boring systems benefit from tough Ethernet switches with IP67 ratings

Moxa offers a line of rugged, IP67-rated Ethernet switches that enable reliable communication for tunnel boring systems. These systems operate under very challenging conditions, so it is essential that devices are built tough and offer a high level of reliability.

Special tunnel boring machines (TBMs) are used to excavate tunnels through hard rock, soft soil, gravel, and other material. Engineers can choose from different types of TBM, such as the earth pressure balance machine (EPBM), which is often used in urban environments to avoid disturbing objects on the surface. In most TBMs, a synchronous monitoring system helps engineers keep track of critical environmental factors such as groundwater pressure, earth pressure, formation pressure, gas composition, and more.

The data from the monitoring system must be transmitted to project managers in the ground control center. Many mining engineers have decided to rely on Ethernet-based networks for superior control and efficient data collection. However, the network devices used for data communication must satisfy certain requirements.

System Requirements
An integrated Ethernet-based communication network for underground tunneling applications will include components such as Ethernet switches, IP cameras, and IP phones. With this kind of system, field engineers can monitor site conditions in real time and communicate with administrators located at the ground control center.

All networking equipment must be designed especially tough for tunnel boring systems, due to the harsh conditions of dirt, dust, humidity, and temperature. In addition, equipment must be able to withstand high vibration and shock conditions, as well as possible exposure to wastewater cooling equipment.

Benefits

  • Installs directly at field sites-The IP67-rated housing protects the Ethernet switch from oil, dirt, dust, water, and other liquids.
  • Secure connections-Standard 4-pin M12 connectors ensure that cables will stay connected even in high vibration conditions.
  • Compact form factor-The small size of the EDS-305-M12 makes it easy to mount on site, even in extremely narrow spaces.
  • Wide temperature tolerance-Many Ethernet switches are available in wide temperature models that can operate in temperatures between -40° to 75°C.
  • Industry safety regulations-Moxa's industrial Ethernet products are compliant with industry regulatory conditions (CE, FCC, UL) and have passed industrial-grade certifications (DNV, GL).
  • Quality assurance-Most Moxa products feature high MTBF values, ensuring high reliability.
