Water treatment companies need a way to monitor PH levels, temperature, and bacterial growth. In addition, they need to determine which factors are affecting water quality. Therefore, communication between the main plant and remote sites at water treatment facilities is critical.

Since cellular providers can only issue a limited number of IP addresses, communication problems can occur along the cellular network between the main plant and remote sites. In addition, using a public IP address on remote devices can be expensive. Due to cost constraints, most cellular data plans only distribute private IP addresses, which are not accessible by other devices on the Internet.

Solution
After implementing Reverse Real COM mode, which comes with Moxa's OnCell IP modem, one of our clients experienced more reliable and cost-efficient communication between their main treatment plant and remote sites. However, this type of cellular network communication problem is not limited to water treatment facilities. By installing the OnCell IP modem at remote sites and enabling Reverse Real COM mode, clients can ensure that their remote devices are always accessible by the central office, even if the device uses a private IP address.

Our OnCell IP modem with Reverse Real COM mode uses a mechanism similar to port mapping that allows remote devices operating on a private IP address to remain accessible to external hosts. When enabled, this mode establishes a transparent connection from the device to the remote host by mapping the device's serial port to a local COM port on the remote host.
