Looking Ahead to Windows CE

Using Embedded Linux as the operating system for MOXA's UC series of embedded computers was the first step in providing software developers with a well-rounded choice of programming environments. To complete the choice, MOXA plans to release Windows CE versions of Moxa's popular UC-7400 series of ready-to-run embedded computers in April of 2006.

MOXA keeps abreast of the requirements of Windows® developers to provide Windows® CE solutions for MOXA's UC-7400 series of ready-to-run embedded computers. The UC-7400 series includes UC-7420, UC-7410, and UC-7408. MOXA's professional kernel development experience with embedded, small footprint communication devices provides the technological skills required for porting the Windows® CE 5.0 kernel.

Windows CE 5.0 is an open, scalable, 32-bit operating system that allows software developers to build a wide range of innovative, small footprint devices. The typical Windows CE based device is designed for a specific use, and often runs disconnected from other computers, or as part of a cluster of distributed front-end computers that communicate with a centralized host. Examples include enterprise tools (industrial controllers, communications hubs, and point-of-sale terminals) and display devices (HMI, advertisement appliances, and interactive panels).

The UC-7400-CE series, which includes UC-7420-CE, UC-7410-CE, and UC-7408-CE, will provide the standard Win-CE development environment consisting of the Windows C library, COM/DCOM, and MFC. In addition, the following development tools will also be provided:

Application Development Environment

  • Moxa WinCE 5.0 SDK
  • C Libraries and Run-times
  • Component Services (COM and DCOM)
  • Microsoft® Foundation Classes (MFC)
  • Microsoft® .NET Compact Framework
  • XML, including DOM, XQL, XPATH, XSLT, SAX2
  • SOAP Toolkit
  • Winsock 2.2

For network-centric, embedded applications, UC-7400-CE not only provides powerful communication hardware interfaces, including dual Ethernet and 3-in-1 serial ports, but also supports the networking and communications capabilities that are built into the WinCE 5.0 OS. The main features that are supported are as follows:

  • Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP): Monitors remote connections to the network.
  • Simple Network Time Protocol (SNTP): Client provides support for synchronizing the device's system time with an SNTP server, and supports Daylight Savings Time.
  • Serial Communications: In addition to the 16550 UART driver bound to a debug port and the console port, a special driver for 8 additional Moxa home-made serial ports is also included.
  • Network Utilities (IpConfig, Ping, Route): Utilities for troubleshooting various network problems are provided.
  • TCP/IP: Includes IP, Address Resolution (ARP), Internet Control Message (ICMP), Internet Group Membership (IGMP), Transmission Control (TCP), User Datagram (UDP), name resolution and registration, and DHCP.

In addition to communication capabilities, UC-7400-CE embeds the following services and daemons. These common and easy-to-use application servers help users migrate the industrial communication applications to the UC-7400-CE embedded computer very easily and conveniently.

Supporting Services and Daemons

  • Telnet Server: Allows remote administration through a standard Telnet client.
  • FTP Server: Used for transferring files to and from remote computer systems over a network using TCP/IP.
  • Web Server (httpd): WinCE IIS, offering ASP, ISAPI Secure Socket Layer support, SSL 2, SSL 3, and Transport Layer Security (TLS/SSL 3.1) public key-based protocols, and Web Administration ISAPI Extensions.
  • Dial up Networking Service: Consists of RAS client API and the Point to Point Protocol (PPP). RAS and PPP support Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP) and RAS scripting.

NEW PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS

UC-7402—The Industrial Grade Ready-to-Run Embedded Network Computer

MOXA UC-7402 is a web server embedded network computer that features dual 10/100 Mbps Ethernet ports, a PCMCIA interface for wireless LAN communication, and CompactFlash for mass storage disk expansion. UC-7402 is an excellent choice for embedded network applications and diverse M2M solutions.

UC-7402 is a rugged, compact embedded computer that is designed for industrial applications. Two key design features are the low power consumption and fanless operation, which together ensure greater reliability and longer system life. The communication oriented functionality includes both hardware and software. The software design is especially ideal for network communication based applications, such as connecting to machines and other devices over a network. UC-7402 provides real-time data access, a secure network gateway, and a VPN router. The built-in web server allows UC-7402 to be used as a web-enabled gateway to let users access monitoring and control functions from anywhere on the network.

Since UC-7402 provides WLAN 802.11b/g connectivity, both wired and wireless networks can be integrated into a system communication medium. Users can capture real-time data from the network and aggregate it into the UC-7402 embedded web server, and convert data into various standard data formats. Data can be buffered and then distributed to the proper web browser.

E-Ticketing System Uses Rugged Ethernet Solution to Handle Passenger Transactions

Five public transportation companies, comprised of one railway company, one regional bus service company, and three municipal public transportation companies, have joined together in a partnership to introduce a new electronic ticketing payment system for people using public transportation—trains, buses, trams, metros, and ferries—in the Netherlands. These five public transportation companies serve 80% of the public transportation market in the Netherlands. With an integrated e-ticketing system, in combination with controlled access to stations and by analysis of the data that e-ticketing can generate, the partnership aims to fulfill the following objectives:

  • To offer an integrated journey rather than a set of trips to passengers
  • To improve and establish more direct relations with the customers
  • To increase public and employee safety when using and working in the public transportation sector

System Description

The scope of the partnership is to implement and operate the central processes of the system, and to set up rules to ensure the compatibility between the various local processes and the central process. The initial suppliers in various local regions will supply the equipment and the electronic identifiers. As Moxa's customers, the individual public transportation companies are free to source additional equipment and identifiers for other regions, provided these are compatible with the local and central processes.

In other words, the e-tracking system must be set up in a way that respects the freedom of each public transportation company to store its own traffic data, to maintain its own customer relationships, and to set its own tariffs, routes, and zones. Moxa's Industrial Ethernet Solutions provide the entire solution to these requirements.

There are forty remote train/bus stations in the system using a total of 192 pieces of the high performance network Ethernet Switch ED6008, which provides the redundant ring, automatic e-mail warning, and web browser management functions for handling huge numbers of passengers passing through the ticket gateway. To extend the transmission distance of the network, the system also uses Moxa's IMC-101 media converter. IMC-101's rugged design provides reliable and stable operation in harsh industrial environments. Moxa's industrial grade industrial device connectivity products make the e-ticketing system more redundant and reliable.

POS/ATM/KIOSKanaged Vending Machines Improve Availability and Reliability

In public transportation systems, the ticketing system plays a very important role. Huge numbers of citizens need to purchase tickets in order to commute rapidly in urban areas. The requirements of the ticketing system in public transportation systems are reliability and intelligence. In the past, the ticketing system was a standalone machine and always needed a human being to check the status of operations. Currently, Moxa's embedded computers, such as
UC-7420, can function as the front-end controller of ticketing machines. Price display LCMs, receipt printers, control buttons, and coin sensors can be connected to UC-7420.

During operation, the UC-7420 keeps a log on the CF card. The central office can retrieve sales records and status alarms instantly over the Internet, making it convenient for administrators to monitor the system remotely. A human need not make frequent checks, and this lowers the cost of operation and management.
