Ethernet I/O emerged as a result of the overwhelming popularity of Ethernet, and boasted the advantages of openness, ease of use, and low costs. For most automation applications, the cabling system is greatly improved by using traditional Ethernet I/O. However, Ethernet I/O servers remain passive in nature and respond only to direct requests for data. The full potential of Ethernet has not been explored. Furthermore, reliable access to real-time data has become more important for factory and business automation, but is difficult to achieve with existing Ethernet I/O solutions, especially for large numbers of I/O points.
