Factory Monitoring with SNMP and IP Video Surveillance
Project Introduction IP video surveillance systems are quickly becoming a preferred alternative to CCTV security camera installations. Their performance and flexibility have made them especially attractive for factory security systems. However, IP video surveillance equipment does not typically provide much support for I/O channels. Combining remote I/O monitoring and IP video surveillance can create difficulties for many system integrators.
System Requirements The client needed to implement an IP video surveillance system at a factory, with certain areas requiring monitoring 24 hours a day. However, in addition to video surveillance, digital I/O devices in the field would be used for remote monitoring and control. The client wished to manage all devices in the factory using a single platform, including all I/O signals. SNMP was the chosen platform, and the complete system needed to provide the following:
SNMP support for each device
I/O device/status control by SNMP
Device status reporting by SNMP trap
Large bandwidth using fiber ring architecture
Industrial-grade video surveillance even in bad weather conditions
System Description
To implement an extremely reliable network backbone that would support 200 IP video feeds, the customer used the EDS-510A and built a redundant Gigabit Ethernet network. However, the EDS-510A only provides 2 digital input channels, which was insufficient for the other items that required monitoring. The ioLogik E2210 Active Ethernet I/O server provided the necessary digital I/O channels. Since SNMP support is built into the ioLogik E2210, all I/O channels were available for control and monitoring using SNMP, so no additional management software was required. Furthermore, status changes for each I/O channel could be actively reported by SNMP trap, eliminating the need for polling. Moxa is the leading company for remote I/O servers that provide full SNMP support.

Solutions for redundant Gigabit Ethernet infrastructure
When new systems are introduced or implemented, factory engineers place a high priority on integrating all devices into a single management system. The SNMP protocol has been well-established in the IT world and is growing more and more popular for industrial applications. Many factories now employ SNMP software to manage their IP-based devices. Moxa's Active Ethernet I/O servers provide full SNMP support, giving industrial users an easy and painless way to integrate their digital I/O devices.
