High-speed Airport Luggage Control
System background
With a baggage throughput of more than ten thousand items of luggage per hour, one of the largest airports in Asia wanted to set up an entirely new RFID luggage tracking system to increase the airport's capacity quickly and efficiently.
   
System requirements
I/O response speed is extremely critical for this application, given that the airport must handle ten thousand bags per hour, and every piece of luggage must be processed in under 50 ms. A high-speed I/O circuit with event-driven automatic report function was the winning feature of the Moxa solution because active reporting was far more responsive than polling all of the I/O channels for exception detection. Moxa provided a high-speed control solution composed of the following products to meet all of the operation requirements:
The ioLogik E2210 Active Ethernet I/O device captures every signal in less than 50 ms.
The EDS-205 industrial Ethernet switch guarantees network connection with a rapid failure recovery of less than 20 ms.
The UC-7420 embedded computer connects to the RFID reader, barcode reader, and all ioLogik E2210 devices.
   
   
 
     
 
Solution description
The ioLogik E2210 works perfectly with the UC-7420 computer and the MXIO API library. The system programmers used the MXIO library to quickly develop a powerful Linux application for the UC-7420, so that the RISC-based controller can manage the ioLogik E2210 without using the complex Modbus protocol.
Two key components of the ioLogik E2210 are the patented Click&Go™ control logic and the active OPC server. Click&Go™ helps the system developers set up intelligent control logic for the ioLogik E2210 with a simple IF-THEN-ELSE configuration. Active OPC server delivers IO-triggered messages from the ioLogik E2210 to the UC-7420 computers, and iseven times faster in IO response speed has a bandwidth reduced by 80% compared to the traditional "pull" architecture. The front-end intelligence and report-by-exception functions allow Moxa's Linux I/O solution to successfully implement this timing-critical Linux application with exceptional efficiency, network reliability, and I/O performance.
