Time is money, and to businesses, machine downtime represents lost productivity and costly expenses. Fast machine diagnostics helps reduce downtime for machine users, enhances maintenance efficiency, and eliminates false alarms and unnecessary maintenance. To achieve these productivity benefits and ensure competitiveness, one oil equipment manufacturer decided to upgrade their Ethernet-enabled remote diagnostics system. The engineers used many sensors to access and monitor the status of every machine, including oil pressure, oil level, and filter status. A reliable and cost-effective data acquisition solution includes the following:

Signal regeneration at the control center
AI-to-AO over an IP network
Solution description
The system used wireless technology because the machines were distributed across a wide geographic area. Three of Moxa's products were deployed to form an efficient peer-to-peer data extension solution over a 3G GPRS network.

‧ ioLogik E1240 8-channel analog input modules
‧ ioLogik E1241 4-channel analog output modules

The key feature of this remote data acquisition system is the peer-to-peer cable replacement capability built into the ioLogik E1200 series. The ioLogik E1240 devices first connect all the machine status signals, then transmit data wirelessly over the GPRS Ethernet through the OnCell 5004 router, and then finally reproduce all the acquired diagnostics data to the ioLogik E1241 devices to deliver the analog output to the PLC-SCADA system in the control center. All ioLogik unit's P2P transmissions are triggered actively by time interval or status changes. With this P2P function, moving the controllers from the remote sites to the central site requires fewer changes in the SCADA system's configuration and allows users to select a cheaper data plan instead of one with static/public IP address, which is possible since the signals are pushed from the remote sites. The engineering center can now quickly diagnose the status of all machines for efficient maintenance.
