Introduction
Project Introduction

The challenges of maintaining and monitoring a remote generator substation are often overlooked when establishing a power grid network. A remote Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system relies on wireless technologies such as cellular, microwave, and satellite, each of which poses unique challenges. For example, cellular technology typically involves addressing network issues such as private IPs, polling timeouts, heartbeat intervals, protocol interoperability, and many more. Deploying a wireless communications system in a remote generator is time consuming and fraught with perils that can ruin a project. The solution will need to be simple enough to reduce the labor and cost required to set up the system, and make seamless integration with SCADA and monitoring software possible.

System Requirements

• GPRS communication
• Push-based data acquisition to the SCADA system
• Instant Email or SMS alarms to alert maintenance engineers
• Easy to set up and use

Moxa Solution

The ioLogik W5340 is a GSM/GPRS embedded solution that is equipped with intuitive IF-THEN-ELSE Click&Go™ control logic. It requires no programming knowledge to set up advanced features such as instant email or SMS alerts, just a few simple clicks in an easy-to-use menu-driven interface. Compared with solutions that require complicated AT commands or programming, the ioLogik cuts time-to-market by more than 90%. The ioLogik W5340 also has a patented push-based Active OPC Server that delivers real time data acquisition over GPRS networks while avoiding timeout complications that arise in traditional polling architectures.

A remote generator monitoring system needs to monitor a combination of digital and analog devices. Alarms involved use both binary measurements, such as for generator status, manual mode, common alarm, intrusion alarm, charger failure, and analog signals, such as for measuring the fuel level or engine temperature. The ioLogik W5340 is equipped with four analog inputs and eight configurable DIOs to accommodate these varied devices. The W5340 has two 5 amp (30 VDC and 240 VAC) relays that can also be used for remote control of the power circuit. It has two 5 amp (30 VDC and 240 VAC) relays for the remote control of the power circuit, and expandable local memory in the form of a 1 GB SD card. These features send system alerts instantly and reliably to administrators, while maintaining a historical record of system operations in a local data log.
