Moxa's full range of PT series Ethernet switches pass IEC 61850-3 and IEEE 1613 tests performed by KEMA

Release Date : 2008-8-15

Taipei, Taiwan, August 15, 2008—Moxa, a leading provider of industrial networking solutions, announced today that Moxa is the world's first and only one company whose full line of PowerTrans Ethernet switches has passed IEC 61850-3 and IEEE 1613 tests performed, which specify environmental and EMI immunity requirements for network equipments used in substations. The tests were performed by KEMA, a well respected laboratory for consulting, one-stop testing, and certification services in the energy and utility markets. Major KEMA clients, such as ABB, AREVA, Siemens etc., are key players in the power automation industry.

The KEMA tests were designed to precisely simulate real substation conditions. All tests for PT series were conducted in four phases. The first phase is the functional phase that focuses on GOOSE messaging, VLAN handling, priority tagging, Rapid Spanning Tree, etc. The second phase focuses on EMC including lightning strikes, thunder, and other electromagnetic interferences. The third phase tests product operability under extreme temperatures ranging from -40 to 85°C. The fourth phase focuses on mechanical aspects and includes vibration and shock resistance testing. The successful KEMA test results show that the PowerTrans series meets IEC 61850-3 and IEEE 1613 standards and attest to its ultra reliability for use in complex, high voltage substation environments.

These Ethernet switches feature the highest availability of substation communications by offering strong EMI immunity, -40 to 85°C operating temperature, redundant ring capabilities, and dual redundant power supplies of 24/48 VDC or 110/220 VDC/VAC for complex and high voltage substations. Maximum flexibility is achieved by a modular rackmount design with high optical fiber and Gigabit port density, making the switches well suited for both retrofitting existing substations as well as establishing networks for new substations. Layer 3 routing is supported for better network performance on large-scale substation LANs.
