Overview
Project Introduction

A leading upstream and midstream oil and gas holdings company based in Houston, Texas, has thousands of wells and pump stations placed atop oil well pads throughout the central USA. These assets are located in remote locations and are exposed to fluctuating temperatures, extreme pressure, and vibration. As is the case with all oil and gas operations, every wellhead on every oil well pad must be operational 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Moxa Solution

Moxa’s robust AWK-1127 Wi-Fi gateway module allowed our client to deploy an extensive site-to-center wireless network that provided a serial connection at each wellhead in their field operation. These wellheads are managed via a central WLAN and cellular access point located at every oil well pad, relaying data back to a central control center several miles away. Moxa’s AWK-1127 provided our customer with the ability to draw the final connection between the sensor network and local access points, linking any serial or Ethernet device to an IEEE 802.11 a/b/g network.  In addition, Moxa supports web-based configuration using built-in Ethernet or Wireless LAN connectivity.


The Moxa AWK-1127 was the ideal choice for our customer’s operation because this technology allowed the customer to use a single device in the serial-to-wireless conversion process.  The open AWK-1127  allowed for the customer’s communications software to access the serial devices from anywhere over a wireless LAN connection, greatly increasing their visibility to the entire wellhead operation. 

Our customer is now able to establish the final connection between central control and their serial networks in the field with an open, industry-certified, robust networking solution. The Moxa AWK-1127, as well as the entire Moxa AWK product line, prove that complex wellhead operations don't always require a complex and expensive solution.
