Scale Without Redesign : Modernizing Water Management With Ignition and Moxa Computers

For many utilities, growth eventually forces difficult decisions as legacy technologies become obsolete, licensing costs increase, communications infrastructure reaches its limits, and operators are forced to learn entirely new systems.

St. Lucie West Services District (SLWSD) successfully modernized its water management infrastructure using Ignition SCADA, Moxa industrial computers, and LTE-based MQTT communications, allowing the utility to seamlessly scale operations and centrally manage around 90 remote assets without a complete architectural redesign.

Today, as SLWSD expands its service territory, incorporates new lift stations, migrates to Ignition, and upgrades its fleet to Moxa's latest UC-2222A platform with Device Lifecycle Management (DLM), these earlier strategic decisions continue to deliver ongoing value.

Summary

Challenges

  • St. Lucie West Services District (SLWSD) faced critical growth obstacles due to a legacy SCADA system with high per-tag licensing costs and an aging, proprietary radio network that was expensive to maintain, vulnerable to lightning strikes, and dependent on exiting vendors.

Solutions

  • Standardized Solution Kit: Deployed Moxa industrial computers with Ignition Edge IIoT, Delta PLCs, LTE, and MQTT at remote sites.

  • Long-term Hardware Upgrades: Upgrading edge hardware to Moxa UC-2222A industrial computers with OS support extended through 2034.

  • Centralized Fleet Management: Adopted Moxa DLM to remotely push updates, configure devices, and streamline maintenance across ~90 edge sites.

Results

  • The Payoff of Planning for Change: Early architectural decisions allowed SLWSD to navigate technology transitions smoothly without major operational disruptions when software, communications, or hardware reached end of life.

  • Sustainable Utility Operations: The district maintains its core focus on operational excellence, long-term sustainability, and reliable service as it expands water treatment capacity and modernizes infrastructure.
