Moxa Helps Achieve 99.99% Tolling Accuracy for the World's No. 1 ETC Network

Brea, California, December, 2016—Moxa partnered with FETC (Far-Eastern Electronic Toll Collection Company), who brought together a team of specialist companies to bring about a multi-awarded electronic toll collection (ETC) system in Taiwan. Rated the best in the world, this ETC system not only significantly reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, but also improves traffic flow. What’s more, it has achieved a tolling accuracy rate of 99.99% since its introduction. All these achievements have garnered the project several world firsts and global awards. The system aims to achieve "fair tolls" and more efficient traffic applications, including better forecasts of future traffic conditions by analyzing the collected data.

Since its launch in January 2014, Taiwan's ETC system has become the world's first nationwide ETC network, as well as the world's longest distance-based tolling system at 926 km long. Relying heavily on network communications, the ETC system processes on average 14 million transactions per day, achieving accuracy rates of 99.99% for both vehicle detection and e-Tag tolling.

The ETC system won the 2015 Toll Excellence Award, awarded by the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association (IBTTA), the 2015 ITS World Congress Industry Award, and the 2015 eASIA Award.

Why Moxa
"In the ETC system, gantries play a crucial role. Moxa's products are highly reliable to endure the harsh conditions on the gantries to deliver a 24/7 nonstop operation," said Richard Wu, vice president of FETC’s Technology Division. He added, "Their products are essential to ensure that the system’s accuracy rate remains above 99.99%. We highly appreciate Moxa’s fast response and professional service. Actually, Moxa was recommended to us by our European partners, based on their positive experiences with Moxa in other projects."

Extreme Reliability
Moxa's products provide a wide temperature operating capability between -40 and 75°C to ensure highly reliable data acquisition and connectivity. Specifically, Moxa's smart I/Os provide a fast I/O scanning rate under 4 milliseconds to capture pulse signals from the vehicles passing by at a high speed. The rugged industrial switches transmit high volumes of data and HD images from each gantry to a roadside server. More smart I/Os are installed inside the unmanned cabinets; they support RS-485 and SNMP protocols, as well as Click&Go control logic for real-time environmental monitoring and alerting.

Trusted Partnership
YC Chang, the managing director of FETC, stated, "FETC is pleased to have partnered with Moxa, whose solutions offer leading technology and rock-solid reliability. We look forward to working with Moxa in the future to provide entire ETC solutions, backed by our expertise and experience, to help our customers stimulate their region’s economy and benefit from the positive environmental outcomes."
