Moxa Launches IEC 61850-3 High-performance PRP/HSR Computers to Power Up Smart Grid Transformations

Taipei, Taiwan, Sep. 29, 2020—Moxa, a leading provider of substation computing solutions and a technology contributor to CIGRE Working Groups, announced a new series of high-performance IEC 61850-3 computers with PRP/HSR connectivity. The DA-820C Series is a fanless 19-inch 3U rackmount computer that features a powerful 7th generation Intel® Xeon® or Intel® Core™ i7/i5/i3 processor and multiple expansion interfaces to enable PRP/HSR, IRIG-B, serial, and Gigabit Ethernet fiber SFP connectivity for smart grid applications.

Versatile to Fit Smart Grid Transformation Needs

For transmission system operators (TSOs) in brownfield substation modernization projects, a smooth migration involves collecting and displaying data from both legacy and new equipment running on different operating systems. Moxa’s DA-820C comes with an Intel® Xeon® or Intel® Core™ i7/i5/i3 processor that can run virtual machines to support multiple operating systems. Using only one high-performance computer to run multiple operating systems on virtual machines, instead of installing multiple computers to run each OS separately, saves space and costs.

Designed to enable IEC 61850 transformation in substations, the computer supports native PRP/HSR connectivity. To handle high-speed, low-latency communications for exchanging large amounts of data while withstanding high EMI/EMC interference, the DA-820C features SFP interfaces for Gigabit Ethernet fiber optic communications to connect intelligent electronic devices (IEDs).

What’s more, Moxa offers a large portfolio of rackmount substation computers that includes the DA-681C 1U and DA-682C 2U rackmount computers to satisfy various substation application needs.

Industry-certified Robust Design

Computers used in substations must be able to withstand harsh environments, including extreme temperatures and high levels of electromagnetic interference. The DA-820C complies with IEC-61850-3 and IEEE 1613 standards to deliver reliable system operation. Compliance with the IEC 60255 standard ensures the DA-820C will work reliably and seamlessly with IEDs as part of a robust substation automation system. In addition, EN 50121-4 compliance confirms that the DA-820C can also work reliably in rail wayside traction power systems.

Proactive Monitoring Utility

Since substation computers are often located at unmanned or remote sites, Moxa provides an easy-to-use utility, Proactive Monitoring, to help TSOs monitor the status of their computers and take preventive maintenance measures. Proactive Monitoring provides a dashboard to track a number of system parameters, such as CPU, memory, and storage usage, as well as the temperature of the CPU and motherboard. Moreover, users can configure the tool based on user-defined criteria to trigger visual or audio alarms via relays and SNMP traps.
